The Legacy of Excellence Award is based on 5 gateways (found on the AGBM web site) that celebrate the ongoing contributions that Black males make to their families and communities as well as their legacy of excellence and the Optimal Achiever; which is an award created in the name of Dr. John T. Chissell.

Our Heroes: We honor those Black males whose contributions typically go unrecognized. This award is to acknowledge their acts of kindness or courage in or for the benefit of their families and/or communities.

Passing the Baton: We salute those Black men who share their resources and volunteer their time and talents in an effort to empower their people. We honor the Black males who provide counseling, guidance and mentoring.
Keeper of the Flame: We want to expose the world to the little known genius men of color have always possessed. So, we highlight our Black scholars, teachers, inventors and leaders.
Our Better Halves: Here, we focus on how Black males are nourishing and nurturing their relationships with their partners.
